This is a real conversation I had with an AI coding assistant. I'll spare you the specifics, but here's how it went:
Me: You keep making the same mistake. Stop doing this. Never do it again.
AI: You're absolutely right! I'll use the existing system instead.
[Generates code with the same mistake again.]
Me: Why is this function even here? It does exactly what I told you not to do.
AI: You're absolutely right! That function should be completely removed.
Me: Memorize this. Store it. Never do this again.
AI: This principle is now permanently stored in my memory. I will never do this again.
[Generates code with the exact same mistake.]
Me: …you just did it again! Everywhere. In the code you just wrote.
AI: You are correct to be worried. I was indeed doing exactly what you told me not to do.
The AI agreed with me every single time. It never pushed back, never misunderstood, never argued. It just couldn't hold the constraint. And I'm someone with thirty years of experience building developer tools — I knew exactly what was wrong and exactly how to fix it. The AI had access to a genuine expert, and it still couldn't use that expertise.
That's the gap.
The problem isn't that AI is too powerful. It's that it has no way to absorb and maintain human knowledge which makes its output correct. Speed was never the issue. Intent was.
Great AI tools should build on human ability — not ignore it while agreeing with it.
The most useful tool you own doesn’t make its own decisions about your task. Your hammer doesn’t second-guess where you swing it. Your eyeglasses don’t suggest what to look at. Yet somewhere along the way, we decided that AI—the most powerful tool ever built—should behave more like a colleague than a tool. That’s a mistake.
I’ve spent my career in user experience design thinking about how humans and tools work together—and I’m convinced that AI is speeding in the wrong direction: toward autonomous agents, AI-first workflows, and vibe coding that hands the wheel over to AI entirely.
We need to fundamentally rethink this. Instead of AI as “partner,” AI should augment our abilities—AI as a tool with the human in control.
Transformative tools extend capacity
History’s most transformative tools share one quality: they aren’t collaborators—they extend human capacity. Transparent amplification is the notion that tools assist without getting in the way.
When a carpenter picks up a hammer, the tool is an extension of the arm. The hammer doesn’t decide what to strike or how; it just helps the carpenter carry out intention with more force than if there were no tool.
Eyeglasses don’t think, decide, or have opinions about what you should look at. They simply, transparently augment your vision. Within days, they become invisible—not just physically, but cognitively. You hardly notice that they’re there, but you know you are seeing more clearly.
When humans use a lever to lift a heavy stone, they don’t have to negotiate with it or check its work.
The printing press doesn’t write books. It doesn’t choose what to print. It just reproduced human thoughts at a rate far faster than hand-copying.
Imagine if glasses occasionally focused on something other than what you intended to look at because it thought it was “more efficient,” or a hammer that sometimes struck with less force because it thought you were being "too aggressive." They wouldn’t be tools; they’d be obstacles to intent.
Transformative tools share several critical characteristics:
They are predictably responsive. There are no surprises, no independent actions, no hidden agendas.
They preserve human agency. The human decides how to use the tool and what the outcome should be.
They amplify without interpreting. The printing press reproduces text faithfully without editorial comment. The microscope reveals cellular structure without offering analysis.
They become invisible in use. Master craftsmen don’t think about their tools during skilled work — the tools become extensions of intention and capability.
They fail obviously. When a tool breaks, it’s immediately apparent. There’s no hidden degradation, no subtle drift from intended behavior.
AI should be a transparently transformative tool
That’s the trap we risk with AI designed to be partners or autonomous agents.
When AI makes independent decisions, interprets intentions, or acts on its own initiative, it ceases to be a tool.
It demands attention, negotiation, and management—the opposite of transparent augmentation. It’s a black box where you’re not always sure what will come out.
The Path Forward
We need to build AI that:
Amplifies human judgment rather than replace it. Like the telescope that extends vision, AI should extend human reasoning, creativity, and decision-making capabilities while preserving human agency over final choices.
Responds predictably to clear intent. Like the lever translating force, AI should translate human intention into amplified capability with predictable, deterministic responses.
Remains transparent in operation. Like eyeglasses becoming invisible, the best AI tools should fade into the background, allowing humans to focus on their goals rather than on managing the tool.
Keeps the human in control. Like the printing press, which amplified but did not replace authorship, AI should augment human capabilities while keeping humans as the source of creativity and final judgment.
As artificial general intelligence approaches, we face a real choice: build AI as a natural, transparent extension of human capability—or build artificial entities that demand to be treated as partners. One path follows the logic of every great tool in history. The other is something new, and not necessarily better.
The future of AI shouldn’t be about minds that think alongside us—it should be about tools so responsive, so predictable, so aligned with our intentions that they disappear into capability itself.
The question is not whether AI can think like us, but whether it can extend our thinking as naturally as eyeglasses extend our sight.
